If you haven’t played The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, that’s a mistake that needs correcting.Excellent 3D platformers like Super Mario 64 and Banjo-Kazooie.It’s the crown jewel of the Nintendo 64 library for so many players, a game that simply must be played by all. It’s a rare sort of game where nearly everyone agrees that it’s one of the best ever made. Everything from its dungeon and world layout to its combat and music blew everyone away. While Majora’s Mask was a dark, divisive follow-up, Ocarina of Time is the perfect leap into 3D for the series. I am, of course, talking about The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask. There are two other titles that attentive readers know I’ve been saving for last, one of which nearly shattered the gaming world upon its release with its incomprehensible design and quality. So many other titles simply have to be mentioned – the Mario Party trilogy and Paper Mario, for example. kicked off the greatest series of all time, and games like Yoshi’s Story and Star Fox 64 showed players that even old genres could shine with the Nintendo 64’s then-powerful hardware. Multiplayer shooters also leaped into the new era wonderfully with Goldeneye 007 and Perfect Dark.
It happened to preside over what I believe is the golden age of kart racers, with two of the best ever – Mario Kart 64 and Diddy Kong Racing – barrelling towards a photo finish. There’s a whole lot more to the Nintendo 64 beyond its flagship library, though. They’re all led by charming characters (uh, maybe not Conker’s Bad Fur Day), bolstered by magnificent soundtracks, and loaded to the brim with masterful design, hidden secrets, and dozens and dozens of hours of gameplay. As far as platformers go, they made a handful of instant classics with Banjo-Kazooie, Banjo-Tooie, Donkey Kong 64, and Conker’s Bad Fur Day. For example, Rare was pretty darn busy during the Nintendo 64 days. Adventuring through an armful of colorful worlds hidden away within the winding, lonely corridors of Peach’s Castle has a certain magic to it that just can’t quite be replicated. Start off with some Super Mario 64 game, an incredible classic that nearly every 3D platformer since is inevitably compared to.
